Back to Austevoll – Hacker Space

A couple of weeks ago, we packed our things at River Security and headed back to the beautiful Austevoll to participate in our semi-annual Hackathon, which we’ve named “Hacker Space.” This event has become an important tradition in our calendar, and after last year’s success in Austevoll, there was no doubt we wanted to return to this place.

The cabins provided a perfect base for four days of intensive work, learning, and socializing. With the sea just outside the door and great hiking opportunities nearby, there’s no doubt this is a place that stimulates both creativity and collaboration.

What is Hacker Space?

Hacker Space is a Hackathon where we at River Security work closely together in different teams to solve challenges that require both technical expertise and creative thinking. The purpose of the Hackathon is to challenge ourselves, learn from each other, and most importantly, have fun while developing new solutions that can be implemented in the company. This year, we had several exciting tasks on the agenda, including developing new security solutions, capture the flag challenges, exploring new innovative technology, and focusing on improving the user experience in our existing systems.

Collaboration and Competition

An important aspect of Hacker Space is building stronger relationships between colleagues. We split into smaller teams and work intensively on various tasks throughout the Hackathon. While there’s a certain level of competition between the teams, the greatest reward is that we learn from each other and share knowledge across departments. It’s always fascinating to see how the teams find creative solutions to challenges, and there’s no doubt that collaboration across areas of expertise makes us stronger as a company.

Socializing in Beautiful Surroundings

The Hackathon in Austevoll isn’t just about work. We place great emphasis on creating a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere where we can get to know each other outside the office walls. During the four days, there was plenty of time for social activities, and the days were filled with delicious dinners, running, hiking, casino night, and good conversations in the jacuzzi.

Back to the Everyday, but with New Impulses

Now that we’re back at the office, we carry with us many new ideas and a lot of inspiration from Austevoll. This Hacker Space has not only been a success in terms of the solutions we developed but also in the bonds we forged and the motivation we all feel now. There’s no doubt that we will continue to benefit from what we learned during these days, both in terms of technical skills and collaboration abilities.

We are already looking forward to next Hacker Space, and who knows, we might once again find our way back to Austevoll for another round of intense work, socializing, and world-class nature experiences.

Btw, want to join our future Hacker Space’s? We are looking for more talented people. Reach out to us for a (digital) coffee chat.
