Built from Within: How Simen and Richard Grew into Senior Roles at River Security

From Junior to Senior: Simen Bai and Richard Beunk Take the Next Step

At River Security, one of our guiding principles is investing in people, not just hiring for skill, but growing potential. That’s why we’re especially proud to celebrate the promotion of two of our colleagues: Simen Bai and Richard Beunk, who have both advanced to the role of Senior Penetration Tester.

Their journey reflects what we believe in: technical excellence, curiosity, collaboration, and the ability to turn challenges into progress — for our clients and for ourselves.

Learning by Doing, and Building Along the Way

Simen and Richard didn’t just grow in their technical capabilities. They evolved into professionals who shape the way River Security operates.

For Simen, some of the most impactful learning happened behind the scenes. Building and refining internal tooling that the rest of the offensive security team now relies on daily.

“That work, along with the research required to improve our tools, pushed me to understand how different technologies work under the hood. It’s rewarding to see how those efforts support real engagements and improve how the team operates.”

Richard reflected on the shift from being purely technical to becoming a strong communicator, something that’s vital in offensive security but often overlooked.

“I used to be fully focused on finding vulnerabilities and documenting steps. But over time, I realized the real value is in translating those findings into something clients can understand and act on. That shift has been transformative, not just technically, but professionally.”

What a Senior Role Really Means

Both Simen and Richard see the promotion as more than a title. It’s a signal of trust, responsibility, and purpose.

“Professionally, it means stepping into a role with more responsibility,” said Richard. “Not just for delivering strong technical results, but for mentoring others, leading engagements, and helping shape how we deliver offensive security.”

Simen shares that mindset, and is eager to keep contributing at a broader level.

“This feels like recognition for the work I’ve done, both in research and tooling, but also a chance to focus more on how we operate as a team. I’m excited to improve our methodologies, mentor where I can, and keep evolving the way we approach offensive work.”

Advice for the Next Generation of penetration testers

One thing both Simen and Richard agree on: growth takes time, effort, and a deep curiosity for how things really work.

“Learn the fundamentals,” Simen advises. “Understand how networks, operating systems, and web technologies actually function. Combine that with hands-on practice, through CTFs or platforms like Hack The Box, and to be patient. Every challenge adds to your foundation.”

Richard emphasizes mindset.

“Stay curious and persistent. You’ll hit walls. That’s part of the job. Break problems into smaller pieces and keep going. Document what you learn. It helps you grow and prepares you for real-world communication with clients.”

Looking Ahead

Simen is eager to continue improving internal tools, refining how River Security conducts offensive operations, and finding better ways to support the OSOC through smarter data collection and processes.

Richard is looking forward to guiding junior team members through complex projects and shaping future client engagements, making sure we’re not just delivering technical value, but strategic insight.

These promotions aren’t just a reflection of Simen and Richard’s hard work, they’re a reminder of what’s possible at River Security. When we invest in people, we invest in the future of cybersecurity.
